Naturalization in 2026 — Why Applying for U.S. Citizenship Is Riskier Than Before

Statue of Liberty, viewed from below.

For lawful permanent residents, U.S. citizenship remains a powerful goal — but in 2026, the naturalization process is far more demanding than many applicants expect.

Recent USCIS policy changes have transformed naturalization from a routine application into a comprehensive vetting process.

What Has Changed?

  • A tougher civics exam for applications filed after October 20, 2025
    • 128 possible questions
    • Up to 20 asked
    • 12 correct answers required
  • Expanded “good moral character” review, including prior immigration history, arrests without convictions, and inconsistencies across filings
  • Increased background investigations, sometimes extending beyond the interview itself and may include neighborhood investigations.
  • Increased social media scrutiny
  • Effective October 28, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will no longer accept money orders or cashier’s checks.

Why This Matters

A naturalization denial can do more than delay citizenship. In some cases, it can:

    • Trigger enforcement review
    • Expose past immigration issues
    • Permanently complicate future relief

Before You Apply

Citizenship is not just a form — it is a legal risk assessment. Strategic legal guidance helps applicants identify red flags before USCIS does.
